Warum wird meine Festplatte nicht erkannt?

Why is my harddisk not recognized?

Zuerst abklären, ob die Box nicht mit der Platte kann, oder ob die Platte nicht richtig formatiert ist:
Ist die Platte in der Box auf dem über USB angeschlossenen Rechner gar nicht zu sehen? Dann am einfachsten: Platte woanders formatieren, ein paar Testdaten draufspielen und prüfen, ob die mediabox die Platte mit Daten überhaupt erkennt (ohne!! angeschlossenes USB-Kabel, also im Player-Modus).
Wenn nicht, dann Jumperstellungen auf der Platte verändern und erneut prüfen. Zuerst als "Master" jumpern, dann als "Cable Select", dann als "Slave". Hilft alles nicht? Stromzufuhr überprüft? Wenn möglich mal andere Platte probieren, um das Problem einzugrenzen, ansonsten den freundlichen Herren vom Support des Händlers Ihrer Wahl anrufen.

First check whether the mediabox won't speak with the drive or whether the harddrive is not formatted accordingly.
The harddrive in the box (connected to the computer via USB) is not show in the computer? Then the easiest way is to freshly format the drive in another setup, copy some test data and check, whether the mediabox recognized the drive with the test data at all (in the "player" mode without!! connected USB cable)
If not: try other jumper setting for the hard drive and check again. First set drive to "master", next to "cable select" and else to slave? Nothing works? Checked the power cabling? Then try another drive if available to locate the problem, and call the kind technician of the support line provided by the dealer of your choice.

Wie prüfe ich die Formatierung der Platte in der Mediabox?

How do I check the way in which the harddisk in the mediabox was formatted?

Unter XP: Start -> Einstellungen -> Systemsteuerung -> Verwaltung -> Computerverwaltung aufrufen. Im unteren Bereich die fragliche Platte suchen und Partitionen prüfen. Unterstützt werden FAT32 und NTFS. Hier kann übrigens auch formatiert werden!
Kein XP? Unter Windows gibt es eine Vielzahl von Plattentools, z.B. von Paragon oder PowerQuest, welche die Informationen liefern können.

Win2K: Execute Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management. Search for the corresponding entry in the lower half of the window. Check the partition information here. FAT32 and NTFS are supported. Note: It is possible to format the disk here!
WinXP: Should be very similar, but no english WinXP available right now, sorry!
No Win2K/XP:There are a lot of tools under windows - e.g. from Paragon or PowerQuest - which can deliver this information.

Wie soll ich formatieren bzw. was ist dabei zu beachten?

How should I format and what should I pay attention to?

Mit folgenden beiden Dateisystemen wurden bisher umfassende Erfahrungen gemacht: FAT32 und NTFS.

FAT32 wird von vielen Betriebssystemen unterstützt, kann aber nur Dateien bis 4 GB verwalten, in den meisten Implementationen ist dieses zudem auf 2 GB begrenzt (so auch in der Mediabox). Bei größeren Partitionen fällt zudem die Übertragungsrate hinter NTFS zurück. Beim Abspielen von Dateien fällt dieses nicht auf, jedoch scheint das Einlesen umfangreicher Ordner erheblich langsamer abzulaufen als unter NTFS.
NTFS wird nur von Windows ab der Version NT unterstützt. Andere Betriebssysteme können lediglich lesend darauf zugreifen. Es unterstüzt Dateigrößen jenseits 4 GB (ab der Firmwareversion 1.16 auch in der mediabox), was für Videos und DVDs wichtig ist.
Bei der Formatierung unter NTFS ist unbedingt darauf zu achten, dass der Kompressionsmodus abgeschaltet ist! Eine aktivierte Komprimierung führt zu teilweise nicht abspielbaren Dateien!

Unter Umständen kann es helfen, die Platte nach Einbau in der Mediabox, also über diese, zu formatieren.
Aufgrund von Recherchen scheinen folgende Dateisysteme ebenfalls unterstützt zu werden: vfat, ext2 und ext3.

Thorough experiences have been made with the following two file systems FAT32 and NTFS.

FAT32 is supported by many operation systems but can only deal with file sizes up to 4 GB. In most implementations it is even limited to 2 GB (like in the mediabox). Using larger partitions the transfer rate drops clearly below NTFS. While this is not noticeable playing media files, it seems to take much longer to read big directories compared with NTFS.
NTFS is supported by Windows since the version NT. Other operating systems can access only in read mode. It supports file sizes bigger than 4 GB (in the mediabox from firmware version 1.16 on) which is important for movies and dvds.
When formatting with NTFS please ensure that the compression mode is deactivated! An activated compression can have the effect that some files are not playable!

Eventually it might help to format the harddisk after installing it into the mediabox - thus formatting it using the mediabox.
According to some researches the following file systems seem to be supported too: vfat, ext2, and ext3.

Kann eine zweite Platte oder ein DVD-Rom zusätzlich angeschlossen werden?

Is it possible to connect a second harddisk or a dvd-rom drive?

Ja! Wenn das eingebaute IDE-Kabel gegen ein Standard-Kabel (sollte 80-adrig sein!) ausgetauscht wird, ist der Anschluß einer zweiten Platte problemlos möglich. Da die Stromversorgung sehr schwach dimensioniert ist, sollte unbedingt ein zusätzliches externes Netzteil verwendet werden. Es reicht nicht aus, den 12V-Anschluß zu verstärken, da vermutlich die interne 5V-Erzeugung überlastet würde!
Die neue Platte taucht dann - analog zu einer neuen Partition - in der obersten Ebene des Dateibrowsers auf. Wie allerdings dann die Pfade für Playlisten aussehen müssen ist noch unbekannt.
Zu CD/DVD-Roms gibt es unterschiedliche Aussagen: Ein Versuch mit einem CD-Rom soll nicht geklappt haben, von einem DVD-Rom wurde es gerüchteweise behauptet, was aber ein Missverständnis zu sein scheint. Ob eine Video-DVD dann auch erkannt würde (wodurch die Box zu einem vollwertigen DVD-Player mit interner Festplatte würde), oder nur Daten-DVDs gelesen werden könnten, ist entsprechend offen.

Yes! After replacing the internal IDE cable with a standard one (should have 80 lines!) the connection of a second drive is easily possible. As the power supply is quite weak you should under any circumstances use a separate external power supply. It is not sufficient to strengthen the 12V line, as the internal 5volts generation would be overloaded!
The new drive will appear in the top level directory like a new partition. The design of the directory paths for playlists is yet unknown.
There are different experiences according CD/DVD-Roms: One setup with a CD-Rom was told not to work, there were rumors that a dvd-rom worked, but this seems to be a misunderstanding. Whether a video DVD would be recognized (thus making the box a fully operational DVD player with internal harddisk) or whether only data dvds would be read is still an open question.

Hinweis #1: Die Stromversorgung der Box ist etwas schwach
Hinweis #2: Probleme mit Festplatten, die vorher im PC eingebaut und benutzt wurden, konnten teilweise behoben werden, indem die Festplatte in der Box neu formatiert wurde (Achtung: Daten vorher sichern!)
Hinweis #3: Zwar kann die Box anscheindend komprimierte Partitionen lesen, hat damit aber arge Probleme, so dass einzelne Filme mitunter nicht laufen. Daher möglichst ohne Komprimierung formatieren!

Hint #1: The power supply is a bit weak
Hint #2: Problems with drives which were used in a normal PC beforehand could be sometimes solved by a new formatting of the harddisk (Caution: First backup your data!)
Hint #3: Although the box seems to be able to read compressed partitions there are massive problems resulting in some videos not running. Thus format without compression when possible!

Die Festplatte wird in Rückenlage eingebaut. Ist das unkritisch?

The harddisk is installed upside down. Is this harmless?

Ältere Festplatten können beim Betrieb in dieser Lage mit der Zeit kaputt gehen. Für neuere Festplatten gibt es von einigen Herstellern Freigaben für einen Über-Kopf-Einbau. Folgende Informationen liegen vor:

Im Einzelfall sollte zur Sicherheit die jeweilige technische Spezifikation zu Rate gezogen werden.

Older harddrives may break down after some time when operated with this orientation. For newer drives some manufacturers have given a permission for upside down installation. Following statements are made:

Ist der SVHS-Anschluss besser als Composite?

Der Compsite-Anschluss bietet schon eine sehr gute Qualität. SVHS stellt senkrechte Kanten deutlich schärfer dar dank der getrennten Übertragung von Farb- und Helligkeitssignal. Auf größeren Fernsehern ist der Unterschied durchaus wahrnehmbar.

The composite connector already delivers a very good quality. SVHS displays vertical corners significantly sharper due to the separate transport of color and luminance. On bigger tv sets the difference is quite noticeable.

Kann die Mediabox bei angeschlossenem USB Videos abspielen?

Can videos be played while the mediabox is connected via USB?

Nein. Anscheinend ist das USB-Interface direkt mit der Harddisk verbunden, eine kleine Schaltung dürfte bei Anliegen einer Spannung über USB den Player herunterfahren und die Platte mit der USB-Schnittstelle verbinden. Dieses dürfte also auch nicht über Firmware-Updates zu beheben sein.
Daher hilft auch nicht das Entfernen des Gerätes über den Windows-Geräte-Manager: Die Spannung liegt weiterhin am USB-Port an.

No. It seems that the USB interface is connected directly to the harddisk. As soon as there is a current at the USB port a little circuit should shutdown the player and connect the harddisk with the usb port. So this should not be correctable by a firmware update.
For this reason it does not help to remove the mediabox from the Windows device manager: the current is still present at the USB port.

Gibt es eine Lösung, den Player zu betreiben, ohne jedesmal das USB-Kabel herausziehen zu müssen?

Is there a solution to operate the player without having to disconnect the usb cable?

Ja, mit ein bisschen basteln: Es reicht aus, einen Schalter in die 5-Volt-Leitung des USB-Kabels zu installieren. Sobald die Verbindung unterbrochen wird, initialisiert sich der Player und das Gerät verschwindet aus dem Geräte-Manager.
Den Schalter direkt ins Gerät zu bauen ist deutlich kniffliger, da direkt an der USB-Buchse getrennt werden muss, abgesehen davon erlischt damit auch die Garantie.
Vorsicht: Dieses kann denselben Effekt haben, wie das Herausziehen eines USB-Kabels ohne vorheriges Trennen des Geräts im Geräte-Manager - es könnte zu Datenverlusten kommen!

Yes given a little bit of soldering: It is sufficient to insert a switch into the 5 volts connection of the usb cable. As soon as the connection is parted the player will initialise and the mediabox vanishes from the device manager.
To install the switch in the chassis is somewhat more complicated as you have to interrupt the connection directly at the usb jack. Furthermore be aware that the warranty will extinguish.
Caution: This may have the same effect like unplugging the usb cable without prior disconnecting the device from the device manager - it could lead to data loss!

Welche Übertragungsrate wird über USB erreicht?

Which transfer rate is possible via USB?

Mittels "HD Tach" wurde eine Übertragungsrate von knapp 27 MB/sec. gemessen, wobei die eingesetzte Platte (Samsung 300GB) rund die doppelte Rate erreichen könnte. Die mediabox wurde dabei direkt an den USB-Port am Computer angeschlossen, um begrenzende Faktoren wie z.B. USB-Hubs auszuschließen.

Using "HD Tach" a transfer rate of nearly 27 MB/sec could be measured, using a Samsung 300 GB harddisk which is capable to deliver nearly twice the rate. The mediabox was connected directly to the USB port at the computer to delete any limiting factors like usb hubs.

Die Transferrate über USB scheint sehr langsam zu sein. Was kann ich tun?

The transfer speed via USB seems extremly slow. What can I do?

Videodateien sind sehr groß, wodurch mit minutenlangen Übertragungszeiten zu rechnen ist. Im optimalen Setup werden zur Übertragung einer randvollen doppelschichtigen DVD sechs Minuten benötigt.
Sollte die Übertragungsrate um ein Vielfaches darunter liegen, so sind die Einstellungen des USB-Anschlusses im BIOS zu überprüfen. Er muss auf den Standard "2.0" oder höher eingestellt sein, zudem muss die Übertragungsart "Hispeed" (nicht Fullspeed) eingestellt sein. Dazwischenliegende Hubs müssen USB2.0-fähig sein.

Video files are quite big, thus a transfer can take several minutes. In an optimal setup the transfer of a full double layer DVD lasts for six minutes.
Should the transfer rate be extremely lower the settings of the USB connector in the bios have to be checked. It must be set to "USB2.0" (or above) and to "Hispeed" (not Fullspeed!). Additionally inserted hubs have to be USB2.0 capable.

Der Lüfter ist zu laut. Gibt es Abhilfe?

The fan is too noisy. Is there some fix?

Ist tatsächlich der Lüfter zu laut oder virbiert die Box auf der jeweiligen Unterlage ? Einfach mal die Box auf eine weiche Unterlage (Schaumstoff) stellen und prüfen, ob die störenden Geräusche jetzt leiser sind.
Der Lüfter ist nicht sehr stabil eingebaut, sondern eingeklemmt und mit Kleber fixiert - hierdurch können Virbrationen entstehen (welche oft verschwinden, wenn die Box geneigt oder hinten auf das Lüftergitter gedrückt wird). Mit einem kleinen Keil oder Polster zwischen Gehäuse und Lüfter kann manchmal Abhilfe geschaffen werden.
Einige Benutzer berichten, dass die Box auch mit abgeklemmten Lüfter problemlos funktioniert. Wer wagemutig ist, kann das auf eigene Gefahr probieren - aber vielleicht zunächst die entsprechenden Posts im Forum durchlesen und prüfen, ob die eigene Festplatten / mediabox-Konstellation vergleichbar ist.
Im Eigenversuch wurde der Lüfter mit Moosgummi eingeklemmt und die Drehzahl mit einem 120 Ohm-Widerstand reduziert. Dieses scheint ein guter Kompromiss zwischen ausreichendem Luftstrom und deutlicher Lärmminderung zu sein - die Box kann kaum noch gehört werden.

This is a difficult question.

Is it really the fan which is noisy, or does the box vibrate on the given surface? Just place the box on a soft cushion (foam) and check whether the noise is reduced now.
The mounting of the fan is not very tight, the fan is more or less cramped in an fixed with glue - this can lead to vibrations (which often vanish when the box is tilted or the fan grid of the chassis is pressed). With a little wedge or a cushion between the chassis and the fan the vibrations can sometimes be stopped.
Some users report that the box works flawlessly with the fan disconnected. Those who dare may check this on own risk - but perhaps check other users / posting before and compare their setup with your harddisk and mediabox.
In an experiment with my own box the fan was cramped into the fixing with foam, and the rotational speed was reduced with a 120 ohms resistor. This seems to be a good tradeoff between sufficient air flow and significant noise reduction - the box can hardly be heared.

Hilfe, der Deckel geht nicht mehr zu!

Help - the lid of the case cannot be closed!

Beim Einbau einer Festplatte in das Gehäuse ist folgendes zu beachten:

Die mitgelieferte Moosgummi-Matte ist dafür da, dass auch kleinere Festplatten (3,5" mit Bauhöhe 17 mm oder 2,5") eingesetzt werden können, ohne dass es rappelt. Bei 3,5"-Festplatten in normaler Bauhöhe (25 mm) ist diese Matte zu entfernen.
Das IDE- und das Stromkabel dürfen nicht zwischen Festplatte und dem unteren Teil des Gehäuses liegen. Die Kabel müssen in dem schmalen Spalt an der Stirnseite verschwinden.
Wird der Deckel um 180 (von oben gesehen) verdreht eingesetzt, so liegen die angeklebten Moosgummistücke auf der Festplatte. Der Deckel schließt dann nicht mehr.

When installing the harddisk in the chassis please check the following:

The enclosed slice of foam is meant to install smaller harddisks (3,5" with 17 mm height or 2,5") without resulting noisy vibrations. When installing a standard 3,5" drive with normal height (25 mm) the foam has to be removed.
The cables for ide and power must not stick between the drive and the lower part of the chassis. After inserting the drive the cables have to be stored into the small space at the smaller side of the drive.
When the lid is applied after a 180 degree rotation (seen from above) the glued stripes of foam touch the harddisk. The cover cannot be closed any longer.

Welche Kodierungsformate bzw. -Endungen werden generell unterstützt?

Which encoding formats and suffixes are supported in general?

Ton: mp2, mp3, wma, ogg, ac3, mpga, m3u, mpa
Bild: jpg, JPG
Video: avi, mp4, mpg, mpeg, m1v, m2v
Untertitel: sub, srt, smi
DVD-spezifisch: ifo, vob, dat
In älteren Firmware-Versionen musste der Suffix immer klein geschrieben werden, inzwischen wird auch Großschrift erkannt - aber nicht gemischt!

Sound: mp2, mp3, wma, ogg, ac3, mpga, m3u, mpa
Picture: jpg, JPG
Video: avi, mp4, mpg, mpeg, m1v, m2v

In older firmware versions the suffix had to be written in small letters, meanwhile big letters are allowed to - but not mixed!

Warum erhalte ich periodisch "Nicht unterstütztes Format", oder er macht gar nichts?

Why do I get a "format not supported" from time to time, or it even does nothing at all?

Mögliche Ursache: Sonderzeichen im Dateinamen. Werden bei manchen Mediaboxen gar nicht, bei manchen nur meistens akzeptiert. Wovon es genau abhängt ist noch unklar. Sicherheitshalber also Sonderzeichen aus dem Dateinamen im Bedarfsfall entfernen.
Ein anderer Grund kann in der faschen Dateiendung liegen. Wenn die Mediabox ein nicht passendes Dateiformat findet, analysiert sie es nicht, sondern bricht mit Fehlermeldung ab.

Possible cause: Special characters in the file name. In some cases the mediaboxes won't accepted it at all, in others mostly, but not generally. The detailled reason is yet unknown. To be sure you shoul delete all special characters from the file name.
Another reason may be a wrong file type. As soon as the mediabox sees a file format which does not fit to the extension, it won't analyze the file but stop with an error.

Können Diashows mit Musik unterlegt werden?

Can slideshows be played with music?

Ja: Während der Musiktitel spielt, <OK> drücken, und ein jpg starten.

Yes: While listening to a song press <OK> and start a jpg.

2.2 Video

Welche Videoformate werden unterstützt, und laufen sie störungsfrei?

Which video formats are supported, and do they run flawlessly

Generell: Verglichen mit anderen Produkten haben die codecs vom Start weg eine relativ gute Kompatibilität bewiesen, die Qualität der Umsetzung ist in noch wenigen Firmware-Releases spürbar verbessert worden.

mpeg-Transportstreams:(Aufzeichnung direkt vom digitalen Fernsehen). Hierzu gibt es unterschiedliche Erfahrungen. Das Ergebnis hängt vom Sender, der jeweiligen Sendung, aber auch von der eingesetzten Aufzeichnungssoftware (ggf. auch den Kartentreibern) ab. Besonders DaVideo wurde verschiedentlich als problematisch gemeldet. Probeweise helfen hier Tools, die das Video recodieren. Ggf. sollte aus der problematischen Sendung eine Video-DVD auf Platte erstellt und abgespielt werden. Zur Not dann die große .vob-Datei in .mpg umbenennen (gleiches Format), wenn eine einzelne mpg-Datei ohne Menue gewünscht wird. Ggf. mehrere VOBs/MPGs mit entsprechenden Freeware-Programmen aneinanderhängen (VOBs sind üblicherweise auf 1 GB begrenzt).
Andere mpg-Formate laufen weitestgehend, in Einzelf&uaml;llen muss jedoch wie beschrieben verfahren werden.
Divx kann in vielen Varianten erstellt werden. Eine Reihe von Varianten funktioniert, einige jedoch auch nicht. Divx6-Videos laufen, die Menueunterstützung wurde noch nicht überprüft. Divx5-Videos mit 768x458, 25 fps, MPEG-1 Layer 3 - Audio in Stereo, 44,1 kHz laufen ebenfalls.
Xvid verhät sich analog zu divx. Manche Filme werden partout nicht wiedergegeben, andere funktionieren ohne Probleme. DVD (als Ordnerstruktur): Der überwiegende Teil lät, manche ohne erkennbare Ursache jedoch nicht. Hier kann der mehrfache Aufruf von "Menu" manchmal Abhilfe schaffen. Kopiergeschützte DVDs laufen selbstredend nicht.
Zum Start einer DVD einfach auf die erste .ifo-Datei im VIDEO_TS-Ordner gehen und auf <OK> drücken.
DVD als ISO: Funktioniert analog zur DVD als Ordnerstruktur (implementiert seit Firmware Version 1.16)
HDTV: Hochauflösende Filme funktionierten bisher in keiner Kodierungsvariante. Dieses dürfte durch Speicher- und/oder Prozessorgrenzen limitiert sein.

Bildstörungen, die sporadisch auftauchen und nicht immer im gleichen Umfang reproduzierbar sind, können auf termische und/oder Stromprobleme hindeuten. Prüfung: Die Box sollte auch in kaltem Zustand, also direkt nach mehrstündiger Trennung vom Stromnetz und nachfolgendem Anschalten, eine DVD sauber abspielen. Probleme (sporadische Bildstörungen) sollten sich nicht bessern, wenn der Lüfter für kurze Zeit zugehalten wird.

In general it can be said that compared to other products the codecs of the mediaplayer have proven quite a good compatability, the quality of the implementation has improved in a (yet small) number of firmware updates.

mpeg transport streams(direct recording of digital television): The experiences broadly differ. The result depends on the station and the individual broadcast as well as the used recording software (sometimes even the low level drives). Especially DaVideo was reported as problematic from some users.
As a test tools to recode the video can be used. You might transcode the problematic mpeg stream to a video dvd structure on your harddisk and try to play this. If nothing else helps you might then rename the big transcoded .vob-file to mpg (same format) if you want a single file without menues. Perhaps you have to join a number of mpegs/vobs with adequate freeware tools (as vob files are usually limited to 1 GB size).
The major number of other mpeg formats do run, in rare cases please process as described before.
Divx can be generated with different settings. A number of settings will work, others do not. Divx6 videos run, the menu support was not tested yet. Divx5 videos in 768x458, 25 fps, MPEG-1 layer 3 - audio in stereo, 44,1 kHz do run as well.
Xvid behaves like DivX. Some videos just will not be played, others work without problems. The following encoding setting proved to work well: 384 x 288 / 480 x 360 / 768 x 428 / 768 x 430 - all in 25 fps, 4MV = yes, HQ AV = yes, I-frame intervall [1:250], QPel = off, GMC = off, Quantization type: h.263

DVD (as a directory structure): Most DVDs are working, others will not without an obvious reason. In some cases the repeatedly pressing of "menu" can make the DVD work. DVDs with copyright protection will not work at all.
To start a DVD just select the first .ifo file in the VIDEO_TS folder and press <OK>.

HDTV: High definition movies do not work yet regardless of the encoding format. This seemsw to be limited by memory and prosessor limitations.

Disturbances of the video which occur sporadically and differ from time to time may be the result of termical and/or problems of the power supply. Verification: Even when cold (after a separation from the power supply for several hours and then reconnecting) the box should play a DVD flawlessly. The problems should not get better when blocking the fan for a short time.

Meine Playlisten laufen nicht. Warum?

Playlisten werden am einfachsten mit Winamp und von der mediabox-Festplatte aus erstellt, damit die Ordnerstruktur stimmt. Ansonsten müssen meistens die Pfade in der Playlist angepasst werden.
Wenn die Playlist nicht mit Winamp erstellt wurde, beginnt jede Zeile bzw. jeder Titel in der Datei oft mit einem Laufwerksbuchstaben (E:\musik...). Die Laufwerksbuchstaben müssen manuell gelöscht bzw. durch einen zweiten Backslash ersetzt werden (\\musik...), damit es auf der mediabox funktioniert.

Playlists can be created most easly using winamp directly on the connected mediabox in order to get the right folder structure. Otherwise the paths in the playlist have to be corrected.
When the playlist has not been created by winamp it often happens that each entry / line begins with a drive letter (E:\music...). These drive letters have to be deleted manually or be replaced by a backslash (\\music...) to get the playlist working on the mediabox.

Nein, playlists können überall auf der Festplatte liegen, solange die Pfade in der Playlist stimmen. Üblicherweise ist der Pfad absolut zum Hauptverzeichnis (durch \\ am Anfang), laut Hersteller sind jedoch auch relative Pfade zu einem Verzeichnis möglich (wodurch der Verzeichnisbaum inklusive playlist nachträglich verschoben oder auf eine andere Platte kopiert werden kann).

No, playlist can be stored anywhere on the hard drive as long as the pathes in the playlist are correct. In most cases the path will be given in respect to the top level directory (by the prefix \\), according to the manufacturer pathes relative to a folder are possible (thus a directory tree can be moved afterwards or even be copied to another drive along with the playlist).

Welche Formate, welche Bitrate wird unterstützt?

Laut Spezifikation mp3 bis 224 kb/s, sowie wmv. In Tests konnte jedoch auch mit 320 kb/s (VBR) problemlos abgespielt werden.

Following the specs mp3 is supported up to 224 kb/s as well as wmv. In some tests playback up to 320 kb/s (VBR) worked fine.

Die Pausen zwischen den Songs sind arg lang. Was kann ich tun?

Das Problem wurde beim Hersteller angefragt: Man arbeite dran, es läge an der Prozessorleistung. Da andere Boxen mit gleicher Hardware auf 0,5 sek. Pause (statt 5) kommen, bleibt nur auf Optimierung durch Zioncom zu warten.

The problem was communicated to the manufacturer: They said they were working on it, it would be related to the processor speed. As other mediaboxes with the same basic hardware manage a delay of about 0.5 seconds (instead of 5) we have to refrain to wait for an optimization by Zioncom.

Erstmal muss die Vorschau im Setup aktiviert werden. Danach sollte das jeweils ausgewählte Bild in der rechten Funktionsleiste als Thumbnail sichtbar sein (soll relativ schnell gehen). Leider werden die meisten Bilder nicht angezeigt, scheint auf Bildgrößen von 1024x768 begrenzt zu sein. Weiterhin werden jpgs im Progressive-Format anscheindend derzeit nicht unterstützt.

First of all the preview mode must be activated in the setup. After this the selected picture entry should be shown as a thumbnail in the function bar at the right side of the screen (it is said to be quite fast). Unfortunately most of the pictures will not be shown, there seems to be a restriction to a maximal size of 1024x768. Furthermore it seems that jpgs stored in the progressive format are not supported right now.

The mediabox searches for a folder "skin" on the installed hard drive (you may try a big letter "S" in Skin). The contained subdirectories are interpreted as separate skins. There has to be a file "screenconfig.xml" containing the configuration for a skin in each subdirectory. When the directory structure an the skin are correctly designed it is possible to select this skin in the setup menu.

Die Mediabox ist sehr sensibel, was die Dateiendung betrifft. Das Dateiformat wird nicht analysiert, sondern von einer korrekten Endung ausgegangen. Dateien mit unbekannten Endungen werden im Browser nicht angezeigt. In älteren Firmware-Versionen werden übrigens nur kleingeschriebene Endungen erkannt!

The mediabox is quite touchy regarding the file suffix. The file format is not analyzed, instead a correct file suffix is expected. Files with unknown suffixes are not shown in the browser. Furthermore in older firmware versions only suffixes in small letters are recognized!

Der Original-Auslieferungszustand für die aktuelle firmware wird folgendermaßen wieder hergestellt:

Box ausschalten.
Box einschalten und dabei die "Play/Pause"-Taste gleichzeitig mit der "Setup"-Taste (am Gehäuse) drücken.

Jetzt ist die Box im Originalzustand (für die jeweils aufgespielte firmware). Das Bild ist wahrscheinlich schwarzweiss (NTSC).

The original state at shipping for the actual firmware is restored as follows:

Switch off the box.
Switch on again while pressing the "play/pause"-key along with the setup-key (on the chassis, not the remote control).

Now the box should be back in the original configuration (for the acutally installed firmware). The video output is probably set to NTSC.

How do I conduct a firmware update?

Die mediabox wird per USB an den PC angeschlossen.
Im Hauptverzeichnis der Festplatte wird ein Unterverzeichnis "firmup" angelegt.
Die gewünschte firmware-Datei wird in das Unterverzeichnis "firmup"kopiert (Links zu aktuellen firmware-Versionen finden sich in diesem Board unter der Rubrik "Bits und Bytes").
Die firmware-Datei muss in "flash_Pearl.bin" umbenannt werden, da die mediabox diese sonst nicht erkennt (analog dazu: flash_mstech.bin bzw. flash_suza.bin)..
USB-Verbindung zum PC entfernen - mediabox ans TV anschließen und Setup-Taste drücken
Im Setup die Rubrik "F/W" wählen.
Die mediabox sollte die neue firmware automatisch erkennen und anzeigen. Es erscheint zudem der Hinweis, dass 3 Sek. die OK-Taste zu drücken ist, um das Update durchzuführen -> also 3 Sek. OK-Taste drücken.
WÄHREND DES UPDATES DIE MEDIABOX NICHT AUSSCHALTEN, ANSONSTEN WIRD SIE BESCHÄDIGT!

Das Update wird dann automatisch durchgeführt (dauert ca. 2 Min.) und die mediabox startet neu.

The mediabox is connected to the computer via USB.
A folder "firmup" is created in the top level directory.
The selected firmware file is copied to the folder "firmup" (links pointing to firmware versions are to be found in the german section "Bits und Bytes" in this board)
The firmware file might have to be renamed to "flash_pearl.bin" (or to flash_mstech.bin or to flash_suza.bin according to your OEM supplier) as the firmware may not be recognized otherwise.
Disconnect the USB link, connect the Mediabox to the tv set and press <Setup>.
Select and start the icon/submenu called "F/W".
The Mediabox should now recognize the new firmware and display status information. An information is displayed that the <OK> key should be pressed for three seconds to perform the update.
DO NOT POWER OFF WHILE THE UPDATE IS RUNNING, OR YOUR BOX WILL BE DAMAGED!

The update will then run automatically (it takes about 2 minutes) and then the mediabox restarts.

Kann ich bei Problemen auch wieder eine alte Version einspielen?

Prinzipiell läß die Box dieses zu (bereits getestet), wobei einzuschränken ist, dass es zwei Firmware - Formate gibt. Es könnte passieren, dass man sich mit einem "fremden" Update zukünftig auf ein Format einschränkt (unverifiziert).

Basically this should be possible (tested successfully) with the limitation that there are two kinds of firmware formats. It might happen that with a foreign update the box is limited to one format for future updates (unverified).

Die Fernbedinung funktionierte in mindestens einem Fall erheblich besser, wenn sie deutlich unter die Mediabox ziehlt. Vermutlich geht man davon aus, dass sie auf dem Tisch liegen bleibt.

The remote control worked better in at least one setup when aimed significantly below the mediabox. It seems to be expected that it is left on the table during usage.

Die mediabox kann sehr gut über die 8 Steuertasten an der Frontseite des Gehäuses bedient werden. Alle relevanten Funktionen sind damit auch ohne Fernbedienung erreichbar.

The mediabox can be operated well using the 8 command buttons at the front of the chassis. Each significant function can thus be started without using the remote control.

Die Mediabox hat als Werkseinstellung NTSC, also das amerikanische Format mit 60 Hz, voreingestellt. Mit mehrfachem Druck auf <TV OUT> (Fernbedienung) kann das richtige Ausgabeformat eingestellt werden.
Nach dem Aufruf von "Werkseinstellungen" im Setup müssen diese Schritte wiederholt werden.

The mediabox is preset to the american NTSC output format using 60 Hz. By repeatedly pressing <TV OUT> on the remote control the right output mode can be selected.
After resetting to factory mode in the setup menu these steps have to be repeated.

Dafür wird einfach ein Ordner "autorun" im Hauptverzeichnis angelegt. Die mediabox springt beim Start automatisch in diesen Ordner und spielt die darin enthaltenen Dateien ab.
